The Duchess Speaks About Cape Fear River NC

Thursday, April 27, 2017 Hi Everyone, Well, that was a rather exiting experience! It is 3:30 pm and we just turned north at Carolina Beach, North Carolina. It never felt so safe to be in the ‘ditch’ again. We just spent the last three hours fighting our way up the Cape Fear River. It was still ebbing for two hours, so we had a very strong current against us. The motor was labouring at 6.8 knots, which we hardly ever ask it to do, but our speed over the ground was a scant 1.8 knots. My God, I thought, at […]

The Duchess Speaks About Stormy Days

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Uncategorized

Monday, April 24, 2017 Georgetown, South Carolina What a day this was. We woke up to dark clouds hovering over Charleston, which we had left behind at noon yesterday. “Let’s turn on the weather channel” was Elmar’s suggestion. They reported thunderstorms all day with heavy rain and flooding. Charleston had a special flood warning, because it had a higher than normal tide on top of the expected 4-6 inches of heavy rainfall during the thunderstorms. They had also mentioned a couple more areas. Of course, we did not know whether they were north or south of our location. There had […]

The Duchess speaks About the Ben Sawyer Swing Bridge

Sunday, April 23, 2017 Charleston, South Carolina So far, we had run aground pretty well every single day. On the top of the list was the Ben Sawyer Swing Bridge, just on the other side of Charleston, South Carolina. We had filled up with Diesel in Charleston because we had no idea when the next fueling spot would show up.  A couple of days ago, going through Georgia, there had been no marina along the way. We had emptied our reserve canister into the fuel tank and had used up pretty much all of it by the time we finally […]

The Duchess Speaks About South Carolina Challenges

Saturday, April 22, 2017 Well, almost two weeks have gone by and so much has happened. Right now we are anchored at the Wadmalaw Island in South Carolina. Elmar is in the bowels of the sail locker, trying to find the wires for the depth sounder at the wheel, so he can connect it. I finally have some time to catch up on my blogs. Mercedessy covered events up to April 10, so I will take it from there. On Tuesday April 11, Pastor Roy and his wife came over to point out anchorages all the way up the ICW. […]

Mercedessy Speaks About the New Adventure

April 10, 2017 Good afternoon, ladies and gentlemen. My name is Mercedessy von Bluetecky. I am Ashanti’s big brother. I joined the Englert family four years ago and have been chauffeuring them everywhere since then. I have had the pleasure of seeing my beautiful sister occasionally, but have not spent too much time in her company. She was towering high above me, standing on her six-foot keel there in the parking lot at American Custom Yachts, while I was parked in her shadow. Now that she is mobile in the water, I would like to spend time with her to […]

Ashanti Speaks About Launch Day

Sunday April 9, 2017 Well, what a time I had! My captain told the crew that I need a minimum of six and a half feet of water to float when they put me in the water. My launch was scheduled for Thursday morning, March 30, 2017 at 1015. That morning the captain’s phone rang at seven thirty: “Elmar, we are having a really busy day with seven trucks coming in today delivering boats. Is it possible for you to come now so we can get an early start?” That was the request of the crew. “Sure, we will be […]

Ashanti Speaks About A New Adventure

Wednesday March 29, 2017 Hi. My name is Ashanti and I am so excited. I am a 36 foot CS Traditional racer-cruiser sloop and I heard through the grapevine that I am to be launched into the water this week! I can’t believe it. I have been sitting here in this hot, dusty storage area for quite some time and all my joints have stiffened up. But I am going home! I am so longing for cold, clean, unsalted water where nothing grows on my belly and salt granules no longer foul up my topsides. My owners, Elmar and Carola, […]

Why are part of the proceeds of my book going to ALS?

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in ALS

My father was active and healthy all his life. When he retired at the age of 65 he was looking forward to finally show my mother the world as he had promised her at their wedding. They had both worked hard all their lives and had never taken any long or expensive trips. That first year they took a bus tour from Toronto to the west coast of Canada. They enjoyed it so much that they booked their second trip to the southern US right away for the following year. One week into the second trip my mother sent us […]

What Does The Name Ashanti Mean?

Posted on Leave a commentPosted in Sailing/Boating

We are often asked what the name of our boat means. Ashanti is the name of an African tribe. 1.5 million people live in Southern Ghana in Africa and their roots can be traced back to the 13th Century. They are world famous gold smiths, but in the 16th century they were wealthy slave traders. Ashanti folklore and mythology can be found in the Southern US as well as in Jamaican folklore. Many African Americans are of Ashanti descent. There is a legend that a Golden Stool, containing the souls of all Ashantis, descended from heaven and rested on the […]

My Excitement About President Trump’s Inauguration

Posted on 6 CommentsPosted in My Take On

JANUARY 20, 2017 – This date will be one to go down in history. I have been watching the inauguration of the new President of the United States of America, Donald, John Trump, for most of today.  It was a very impressive day, executed to the minute, with an upbeat, positive mood throughout the day.  Millions of people around the world were watching. The new President’s speech was exactly what the US population were yearning to hear and they were not disappointed.  He was positive, inspiring, encouraging and not afraid to say what everybody was hoping someone would put into […]
